What’s stopping you from starting today?
- I’ve got a holiday booked in 3 weeks, I’ll wait until I’m back.
- The kids go back to school soon, let’s get that out the way first.
- As soon as my shoulder feels better, I’ll get started.
- I need to get in shape first (!?!?!?!?!?!).
Do any of these objections sound familiar?
There is a real sense of achievement when we make a decision. Such as, “That’s it, I’m doing it! I’m joining the gym”, or, “I’m going to start that diet!” That decision has a powerful effect on us, and isn’t it strange how even at this stage it gives a feeling of accomplishment before we’ve even started?
Once we’ve made a decision like this it’s common to procrastinate, and because we feel like we’ve already begun we can afford to delay the process. This goes on and on until…Nothing. Ever. Changes.
It’s why Nike have the best slogan in the world. “Just do it”.
So many of us have amazing ideas. The cloud of our imagination is bursting with grand plans and dreams. Yet we are awful at stopping ourselves from doing great things.
Why? Is it fear? Doubt? Timing? Do you not feel ready? Yes! To all of them.
We all have these feelings stopping us from doing what we really want to do. The very few that don’t become pioneers, Captains of Industry, successful people who we look up to.
One person in a million is truly a genius. A Mozart, an Einstein. Sorry but if you’re reading this, myself included, we’re not that sort of person! However, those other “normal” people who succeed with their dreams did so, not because they’re smarter than any of us, but because they were more courageous.
They simply did the thing.
Was it easy? No. Did they fail? Yes. Did that failure define them? No. It made them who they are today.
The path to success is paved in failure. Successful people learn from their failures, and their experience becomes invaluable.
I am so fortunate to be surrounded by clients who are at the top of their game. CrossFit Leamington has a membership full of high-flyers who dominate their careers and successful business owners. I love talking to them and am so inspired by what they do.
Without knowing it, many of them mentor me in the same way my family and best friends do.
If I could simplify their message to you, it’s this.
Stop waiting. Get started. Just do it! If you got started TODAY, doing the thing that you wanted, in 6 months’ time your life will be better.
Start that process of change. Join that gym. Start your diet. Apply for that job. Go for that dream.
